China, Japan To Enhance Defense Exchanges — CCTVisiting Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie has met with his Japanese counterpart Toshimi Kitazawa in Tokyo. The two sides have agreed to enhance defense exchanges as part of efforts to further boost ties and mutual trust.
The Chinese defense minister attended a military ceremony at the Japanese Ministry of Defense on Friday. The Japanese side welcomed him with a guard of honor.

My Comment: I never thought that China and Japan would reach this level of cooperation on military and political issues in my lifetime. Clearly the world is a different place, and while many in Asia still harbor a deep resentment against Japan’s wartime atrocities, present needs and priorities are superseding past animosities and lack of trust.

As U.S. President Barack Obama prepares to announce his new Afghan strategy, members of Congress are offering last-minute advice. Mr. Obama will spell out his plan Tuesday in a speech to the nation from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, as lawmakers get back to work after a holiday recess.
Congressional support will be crucial to President Obama’s plan, since lawmakers must approve the funding.

While much of the focus on Tuesday’s unveiling of President Obama’s revamped Afghanistan strategy will be on the number of U.S. troops he’s expected to send, that decision is really a sideshow to the critical battle now under way on the ground. Far more important to prospects of victory in Afghanistan is jump-starting a moribund effort to woo nonideological Taliban fighters to switch sides in exchange for paying jobs. Pentagon officials are hoping to repeat the success of similar tactics in Iraq.

My Comment: Every month a number of stories are published that promote the idea that the Taliban can be wooed to switch sides …. when all the evidence is the contrary.
The Soviets tried to do this extensively in the 1980s, and it failed miserably. The reason why is simple …. no religious Taliban soldier or leader will ever give up on his religious beliefs for cash. The war against the Soviets was constructed as a religious war against the infidel communists …. and it was successful (helped with hundreds of millions of dollars in aid from the West). This war in Afghanistan is being constructed the same way …. a war of liberation against the infidel West.
Our best hope in Afghanistan is to work with the more than 400 different tribal groups that make up most of the country. They can be bought with aid and assistance, and they have the means to stop the Taliban. Will this be the policy pursued by the White House …. stay tune till after tomorrow’s West Point speech by President Obama.

Rushed into law by Congress just weeks after Sept. 11, 2001 three controversial provisions of the Patriot Act granting officials far-reaching surveillance and seizure powers in the name of national security, are due to expire this New Year’s Eve.
Two differing bills passed by the House and Senate judiciary committees in recent weeks will have to be reconciled in Congress, but only when the Senate isn’t backlogged by health care, Democratic aides told ABC News.

BETHLEHEM, West Bank — A writer seeks the surprise of a “man bites dog” story. The most violent times of the Second Intifada, which took place under the leaden winter skies of early 2002, gave me mine. I wrote about Arabs in the rain.
It was raining in the city of Jesus’ birth throughout “The Collaborator of Bethlehem,” the first of my Palestinian crime novels. I set the story during the brief Middle Eastern winter because it makes the place look different, not as one might expect.

My Comment: Unlike the previous two Intifada’s that were organized and managed by Fatah, another Intifada would involve a second partner …. Hamas. But with these two organizations fighting among themselves one can only expect a future intifada to be bloody and violent …. especially among the Palestinians.

La familia Eee sigue creciendo y el último retoño sacado de la factoría taiwanesa se llama Eee PC 1201T. Las novedades de este nuevo modelo de 12 pulgadas (lo de netbook lo dejamos a tu criterio) llegan de la mano de AMD y NVIDIA, y es que la nueva plataforma Congo se verá reforzada con la presencia de gráficos ION, así que ya te puedes ir haciendo una idea del equipito que está por llegar.
La velocidad del procesador es de 1,6 GHz y, para completar la lista, incluyen 2 GB de RAM DDR2, un disco duro de 250 GB, una batería de 6 celdas y un diseño que guarda la misma línea de lo presentado últimamente por la marca. Por el momento no sabemos cuándo llegará al mercado, así que tampoco podemos decirte por cuánto. Sólo nos queda esperar.

Modifican un mando de Xbox 360 para que funcione con una NES

Mientras algunos pasamos el fin de semana buscando películas para ver en el cine, otros se dedican a proyectos tan extraños (pero impresionantes) como el de este artículo. Francois Gervais se las ingenió para hacer que el mando de su Xbox 360 funcione con una vieja NES. Para conseguirlo usó un procesador Cortex M3, y varias líneas de código, disponibles siguiendo el enlace LEER. Después del salto hay un video del hack en funcionamiento, y debe quedar entendido que si te atreves a duplicar la hazaña, queremos que nos cuentes al respecto.

Lancerlink MPJ-104WCE: Un picoproyector con procesador ARM y Windows CE

Son muchos los picoproyectores que hemos visto, pero ninguno como este MPJ-104WCE de Lancerlink. Y es que este peculiar modelo se caracteriza por incluir un procesador ARM9 de 400 MHz, 64 MB de flash y Windows CE 5.0. Sí, todo un sistema operativo con el que poder abrir archivos PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, WMV y MPEG-4 a una resolución de 640 x 480 píxeles, quedando todo perfectamente controlado conectando un ratón en el puerto USB que incorpora. Lamentablemente sólo está disponible para el mercado japonés. Aun así, estaremos atentos para ver cuándo sale a la calle y a qué precio.

Vídeo: El MSI U230 más de cerca (y con su ranura SIM al descubierto)

En los límites de lo que es un netbook. Así es como definíamos al nuevo miniportátil de MSI, un potente equipo de 12,1 pulgadas que se las ingenia para guardar en su carcasa un procesador AMD Athlon Neo X2, 500 GB de disco duro (esto ya es otra cosa), gráficos Radeon HD 3200, y hasta una ranura SIM que no aparecía por ninguna parte en su anuncio oficial. Por 440 euros parece que el U230 se sale un pelín del segmento, pero completo es como pocos. Si hemos despertado tu interés, encontrarás tras el salto la primera toma de contacto de NetbookNews.

La placa ASUS Maximus III Extreme podrá configurarse por Bluetooth

A algunos nos encanta configurar hasta las más mínimas opciones de nuestros dispositivos, pero no se nos había ocurrido que hacerlo por medio de Bluetooth podría ser una buena idea. La placa base Maximus III Extreme de ASUS permite que teléfonos con Bluetooth puedan modificar opciones de sistema inalámbricamente. Con más precisión, es posible”revisar el estatus del hardware del sistema y cambiar parámetros”, además de soportar funciones más convencionales como reproducción de música, y conversaciones vía Skype. Los detalles sobre el funcionamiento seguramente serán presentados en un futuro cercano, y es que por ahora ni siquiera hay ni precio o fecha disponible.

Chrome OS con compatibilidad WiFi compilado en 1 GB de memoria

Si todavía mantienes esa memoria de 1 GB que conseguiste la última vez que visitaste el SIMO, seguramente no hayas podido probar la versión ejecutable desde USB de Google Crome OS. Como ya viste, uno de los requisitos era tener una memoria de 4 GB en la que almacenar la versión compilada de Hexxeh, así que hasta ahora los propietarios de memorias de menor capacidad han visto frustradas sus intenciones de ejecutar el esperado sistema operativo.
Pero eso era antes, y es que el creador de la primera compilación está de vuelta con una con 0% código grasa, ya que un pendrive de 1 GB bastará para ejecutar esta nueva versión con compatibilidad WiFi incluida. Tienes todos los detalles en el enlace de lectura, ya nos contarás.

Rocketfish WirelessHD Adapter: Otra forma (no muy asequible) de quitar cables a tu televisión

No hay duda: el WirelessHD Adapter de Rocketfish es más feo que pegarle a un padre, pero a diferencia del FlyWire, está a la venta. Y es más “barato”. Aunque eso tendrá que hacerlo valer frente al Philips Wireless HDTV Link y el Sony DMX-WL1T. Sea como sea, Best Buy ya tiene su primer adaptador inalámbrico dentro de su gama de accesorios AV, prometiendo audio y vídeo de alta calidad (hasta 1080p) a una distancia máxima de 10 metros sin necesidad de utilizar cable alguno. ¿Merecerá la pena por 600 dólares? Dejemos que eso lo decidan los consumidores…

Kindle cierra noviembre siendo el producto más vendido en Amazon

Es curioso que mientras en determinados sectores los e-books no terminan de romper -básicamente por la poca familiaridad que se tiene aún con ellos-, en otros están que arrasan. Ese es el caso del Kindle, que se ha desmarcado como todo un éxito de ventas en Amazon a juzgar por las últimas noticias recibidas de parte del distribuidor online. Y es que, según apunta, el libro electrónico es el producto más vendido de noviembre, convirtiéndose además con ello en el mejor mes de su historia. Toda una señal de la buena acogida que tiene el dispositivo entre los asiduos lectores, y eso que aún no ha empezado la campaña de Navidad. ¿Será el Kindle el regalo estrella de la época consumista por excelencia? Por mal camino no va, eso está claro.

Doka Harumi: Tú sí que vales

El vídeo que te traemos hoy no muestra ninguno de esos casting de cazatalentos que tan de moda están hoy en día, todo lo contrario, se trata de Doka Harumi, una participante de IREX 2009, la Exposición Internacional de Robots celebrada en Tokio.
Como podrás comprobar, resulta complicado soportar la coreografía al completo, no sabemos si por nuestro escaso ritmo o por el miedo que nos da ese robot con aspecto de colegiala a lo Sailor Moon. No te entretenemos más, tras el salto te dejamos con el vídeo del baile al completo.
