KANEOHE, Hawaii (Reuters) – President Barack Obama has summoned the heads of U.S. intelligence agencies for a meeting on Tuesday to discuss ways of preventing a repeat of the attempted bombing of a Detroit-bound airliner on December 25.

Seeking to counter criticism of his administration over an intelligence breakdown, Obama on Thursday said he expected to receive assessments from several intelligence agencies Thursday evening and would review them during the weekend.

My Comment: The last thing that the Intelligence Chiefs want to find themselves in …. is to be called to the White House to discuss intelligence failures. I expect a number of people to be working non-stop for the next few days to assemble proposals on how to prevent future terror incidents …. but unfortunately this will not solve the problem. The problem resides in how the President wants to combat the war on terror …. a war that the President is skeptical to acknowledge is actually a war to begin with.

El 2009 ha sido un año lleno de alegrías, y unos pocos desencantos. El Palm Pre llegó a nuestras manos, Amazon empezó a dominar con su Kindle, Android es el pan nuestro de cada día, Windows 7 salió a la venta con un éxito arrollador, Apple sigue causando adoración, y en fin, las emociones del mundo de la tecnología continúan sin parar.

Si algo ha sobresalido durante este año es nuestro crecimiento: cada vez somos más los fanáticos de Engadget, y como reflejo, el equipo de editores también ha crecido considerablemente. Cada vez podemos brindarte más noticias, más rápido, y con diferentes puntos de vista.

Es cierto que para muchos este año no fue uno de los mejores (la palabra “crisis” sigue en la boca de muchos), y por eso la felicidad no es completa para nadie. De todas maneras, nunca hay mejor tiempo que el presente para disfrutar, y el futuro para planificar.

Todos quienes conformamos Engadget te deseamos muchas alegrías en el 2010 y te agradecemos por ser parte de nuestra gran familia. Que el año nuevo sea lleno de éxitos… y que por supuesto muchos gadgets terminen en tus manos.

Aunque eso de mezclar a un pequeñísimo netbook con un grandísimo teléfono nos parezca interesante, debemos admitir que el resultado final podría no ser muy práctico. Sin adelantarnos a los hechos, aquí tenemos al BPhone, un curioso híbrido con pantalla de 5 pulgadas, teclado QWERTY, y un sistema operativo que podría ser Windows XP. Como te habrás dado cuenta, no poseemos datos concretos sobre este dispositivo; no sabemos quién es el fabricante, ni el precio, y peor aún la fecha o lugares de lanzamiento. De todas maneras, después del salto hay un par de videos que prueban su existencia, y al menos nos entretienen por unos minutos.

Parece que Acer va lanzada con la nueva plataforma Pine Trail, ya que si ayer pudimos ver el nuevo Eee 1001P, hoy nos llega este modelo perteneciente a la familia Aspire One: el AO535h. Entre las prestaciones a destacar encontramos un Atom N450 Pineview como protagonista, gráficos Intel GMA 1350 y una autonomía de 10 horas aseguradas por el fabricante.

El resto lo completan un disco duro de 160 GB, 1 GB de memoria RAM, Windows 7 Starter y una batería de 4400 mAh de seis celdas. En cuanto a precios parece que llega con uno muy interesante, 299 dólares (210 euros), así que seguramente haga olvidar los actuales modelos en cuento salga a la venta. ¿Cuándo? Debería aparecer muy pronto, quizás en un par de semanas.

¿Qué es eso de que el Pre sólo es para trabajar? Palm, después de no pocos ruegos, ha incluido una librería llamada SDL en su actualización 1.3.5 de webOS que ofrece a los desarrolladores acceso al hardware a bajo nivel, haciendo posible crear aplicaciones con aceleración gráfica. Esto es todo lo que ha necesitado un programador casero llamado zsoc, que ni corto ni perezoso, ha dado forma a un port de Doom casi perfecto y hasta con soporte de teclado. Obviamente, manejar un FPS por la vía táctil es poco menos que imposible (no tanto como Tekken en un HD2, de todas formas), pero eso no quita para que te recrees viendo el vídeo demostrativo que tienes tras el salto.

Si el no poder poner tus manos encima de un teléfono Dell con Android está acabando con tu paciencia, será mejor que no veas el vídeo que tienes tras el salto, ya que podría ser demasiado para ti. Tranquilo, no verás ninguna licuadora asesina de gadgets triturando el esperado modelo, más bien se trata de una operación de estética bastante peculiar.

En el vídeo que tienes tras el salto ver tras el salto se muestra la increíble transformación de un Dell Inspiron Mini 10 en el mini 3i. Puede que a fin de cuentas el dispositivo no sea de lo más práctico con sus 10 pulgadas de pantalla, pero no podemos negar el excelente trabajo que ha realizado su creador, consiguiendo incluso un resultado bastante parecido al modelo original.

Si te has cansado de esperar a que los fabricantes del sector se dejen de rumores y saquen de una vez un e-book a color, Paradigm Shift tiene una alternativa interesante para ti. Se trata de los lectores EER-051 y EER-071WF, dos libros electrónicos con paneles de 5 y 7 pulgadas, respectivamente, que dejan el blanco y negro de lado para ofrecerte todo el esplendor de la gama cromática. ¿El problema? Pues que lo hacen “con trampas”, incluyendo pantallas de tipo LCD en lugar de usar la tecnología de tinta electrónica.

Si este pequeño inconveniente no te supone mucho desencanto, te interesará además saber que incluyen hasta 2 GB de memoria interna, ranura para tarjetas SD, reproductor MP3 y compatibilidad con multitud de archivos (TXT, DOC, PDF, HTML, etc). En el caso del EER-071WF incluso ofrece soporte para vídeo, visor de fotos, conexión WiFi y viene con SO Windows CE, asemejándose más al concepto de MID que al de un e-book, la verdad. A pesar de que ambos modelos no estarán a la venta hasta febrero (por 150 dólares (104 euros) en el caso del de 5″ y 200 dólares (139 euros) en el de 7″), su fabricante ya ha anunciado que estarán presentes en el CES 2010 para deleite de los asistentes.

¿Teléfono o cámara de vídeo? ¿Windows o Android? Son muchas las dudas que despierta el recién filtrado Motorola “Shadow“, un terminal de alta gama que ha aparecido misteriosamente en unos foros taiwaneses. Por suerte, podremos despejarlas durante el CES. El nuevo terminal del fabricante estadounidense (malamente traducido por “Mirage”) ha llegado a la red de redes en una imagen con el color aparentemente invertido (abajo tienes la “reconstrucción”) y su espectacular ficha técnica parcial, que detalla cifras y datos tan jugosos como un grosor de 9 mm, una pantalla 850×484 de 4,3 pulgadas, un puerto HDMI, y una cámara de 8 megapíxeles capaz de grabar vídeo a 1080p (!).

¿Necesitas más excusas para prestar atención al próximo CES? Recuerda que la fiesta comienza el 7 de enero.

Claiming prosecutorial misconduct, a federal judge Thursday threw out all charges against five Blackwater Worldwide guards accused of killing 17 Iraqi civilians in downtown Baghdad in 2007, a bloody event that had inflamed relations between the United States and Iraq and stoked international anger over the use of private security contractors in a war zone.

My Comment: This court case may end …. but the legacy of what had happened will last a lifetime.

Court Sides With Government In Surveillance Case — Houston Chronicle/AP

NEW YORK — A federal appeals court ruled Wednesday that law professors and attorneys who represent Guantanamo Bay detainees cannot force the government to reveal whether an anti-terrorism program eavesdropped on their conversations.

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling supported the findings of a lower court judge in Manhattan who also rejected the attempt to uncloak the warrantless electronic surveillance system’s targets.

My Comment: I suspect that the files and transcripts of these discussions must be explosive for the Federal Government to go through all this trouble to make sure that it remains secret.

Maybe in 50 years the truth will come out.

Jet Plot Shows Growing Ability of Qaeda Affiliates — New York Times

WASHINGTON — The plot to blow up a Northwest Airlines flight over American soil on Christmas Day represents an ominously new and lethal ability by a branch of Al Qaeda to attack the United States directly, according to government and independent counterterrorism specialists.

Until now, American officials had expressed concern over the capability of Qaeda affiliates in North Africa, Yemen and Iraq, and a militant Islamist group in Somalia closely tied to Al Qaeda, to attack American and other Western targets in their regions. But they remained confident that these groups — unlike Osama bin Laden’s Al Qaeda in Pakistan — could not threaten the United States itself.

My Comment: Al Qaeda’s base of operations has been obliterated in Afghanistan, and what is left in Pakistan is slowing being squeezed by Pakistan and by CIA/Special Ops. Places like Yemen and the empty expanse of Africa is all that they have left …. and that is where they are going …. and quite frankly …. that is where we should also be.

Iraq Hostage Peter Moore’s Release Raises Questions — BBC

As with most hostage dramas in the Middle East, the release of information technology specialist Peter Moore in Baghdad raises many questions, some of which may never be answered.

The release itself was unheralded until the last moment, when word went round that British Foreign Secretary David Miliband was about to make a statement on the Baghdad hostages.

Even then, there was nothing publicly known to suggest that it would be the happy news of the release of a live detainee, rather than grim tidings that another of the five had been handed over dead, as three already have been in June and September this year.

The CIA Takes a Big Hit in the Afghan War — Time Magazine

The U.S. intelligence community is reeling from one of the worst days in the CIA’s history: the death of seven employees in a suicide bombing in Afghanistan on Wednesday. In keeping with its practice, the Agency will not comment on the deaths until it has formally informed the families of those killed. But several former CIA officers tell TIME the deaths will cast a pall over the Agency. “People walking into [CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia] will look at that Memorial Wall in a different way today,” one former operations hand. “On a day like this, you want to stop in front of those black stars and bow in silence.” There are currently 90 stars on the CIA’s Memorial Wall at the Agency’s headquarters: each star represents an employee killed in the line of duty. Many of their names remain secret.

For the Afghans, the big Americans in full battle gear looked like beings from another planet. At each turn of the road, soldiers on the point knelt on the ground, automatic weapons ready. The men and women on the security walk were staggered in zigzag formation to keep casualties low in case Taliban sharpshooters were in the area and taking aim. Capt. Casey Thoreen, 30, the commander of the unit, monitored his radio for intelligence.

Orange ofrecerá "llamadas HD" en Reino Unido y Moldavia el año que viene

¿Qué es una llamada normal y qué es una llamada en HD? Hasta el momento nunca habíamos notado píxeles arañándonos los oídos cada vez que hablamos con nuestras madres, pero en Orange parece que piensan dar solución a problemas inexistentes con su nuevo servicio HD Voice, próximamente disponible en Reino Unido y Moldavia.

Chanzas a un lado, parece ser que esta opción disponible en zonas con cobertura 3G de ambos países permitirá con la ayuda de “varios teléfonos” hacer que la persona al otro lado de la línea suene como si estuviera “en la misma habituación”. Tal será su calidad, que en palabras del jefe de Orange UK, Tom Alexander, “una vez que la gente lo prueba, no quiere volver” a las llamadas tradicionales, y hasta se ha comparado el sonido con la diferencia entre la radio de onda media y las emisiones en FM. Será cierto, suponemos, pero mientras no lo saquen de su área inicial de pruebas, deberemos conformarnos con mirar escuchar de lejos.

Apple ha actualizado una de sus viejas patentes, despertando así el interés de muchos en ver de qué se trata. En esta ocasión, se trata de la idea de un mando estillo Wiimote de la Wii para controlar el Apple TV.

Poniendo al día la patente, en Cupertino han incluido la posibilidad de incorporar sensores de movimiento en el mando haciendo el concepto mucho más parecido al de Nintendo si cabe. El uso, como se puede ver en la imagen que tenéis a continuación, estaría centrado en la introducción de texto, navegación por los menús y rotación de fotos.

Sony Vaio T se renueva (por dentro) con mejores prestaciones

Año nuevo, vida nueva. Esa misma filosofía que nos invade a muchos cuando comenzamos un nuevo año es la que ha debido motivar a Sony para decidirse a lanzar una nueva versión del Vaio T (también conocido como TT según qué país). El modelo ha sido así divisado ya en la Sony Style japonesa, ofreciendo una batería que promete mucho más aguante a sus usuarios, además de incluir algunas pequeñas mejoras.

De esta manera, los renovados laptops mantienen la posibilidad de ser adquiridos con los tres tipos conocidos de CPU (Celeron SU2300, Core 2 Duo SU9400 o SU9600), junto a la gráfica Intel GMA 4500MHD, aunque ofreciendo ahora hasta 8 GB de RAM y una capacidad de almacenamiento de 512 GB (SSD) o de 500 GB (HDD). Respecto a su autonomía, los nuevos Vaio T prometen aguantar sin necesidad de corriente durante unas 11 horas con la batería estándar y hasta 17 horas si se le acompaña de la versión extendida.

Por el momento, las nuevas características sólo han sido introducidas en Japón, donde se puede adquirir uno de estos Vaio T a partir de los 129.800 yenes (1.400 dólares/977 euros al cambio). Aun así, imaginamos que será cuestión de tiempo que se deje ver por otros mercados.
