Earn-Key Joo of Samsung Electronics broadening his global perspective at Shorenstein APARC

August 23rd, 2010 – Shorenstein APARC, Corporate Affiliates News Earn-Key Joo, a vice president with the Human Resources Development Center of Samsung Electronics, is a current fellow with the Corporate Affiliates Program of the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (Shorenstein APARC) at Stanford University. He spoke recently about his work with Samsung Electronics, his research project, and his Corporate Affiliates experience.

Russia in color, a century ago

With images from southern and central Russia in the news lately due to extensive wildfires, I thought it would be interesting to look back in time with this extraordinary collection of color photographs taken between 1909 and 1912. In those years, photographer Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii (1863-1944) undertook a photographic survey of the Russian Empire with the support of Tsar Nicholas II. He used a specialized camera to capture three black and white images in fairly quick succession, using red, green and blue filters, allowing them to later be recombined and projected with filtered lanterns to show near true color images

Now that the oil well is capped…

Between April 20 and July 15, 2010, a generally accepted estimate of nearly 5 million barrels (200 million gallons) of crude oil emerged from the wellhead drilled into the seafloor by BP from the now-destroyed Deepwater Horizon drilling rig. Now that the flow of oil has been stopped, the impact of all the spilled oil and natural gas is still being measured.
