Storage capacity is a stack of three multipliers. Vertically, the clear height minus the top clearance and one pitch, divided by the per-level pitch (pallet load height + beam depth + lift clearance), sets the number of beam levels above the floor — plus the floor level itself (the +1). On the floor, the footprint minus aisles sets how many bays fit; the forklift type fixes the aisle width. Multiply by pallets per level to get total positions. The aisle is the biggest lever: going from a counterbalanced to a narrow-aisle truck can lift density well over 30%.

A number the tables do not give: at 9.5 m clear with 0.80 m top clearance and a 1.45 m pitch you get 6 levels — the top of the load sits at (6−1) × 1.45 + 1.20 = 8.45 m, about 89% of the clear height.

What limits the number of levels?
Clear height minus the top clearance to sprinklers/roof, divided by the per-level pitch. The pitch is the pallet load height plus the beam depth plus the lift-in/out clearance — usually ~150 mm.
Why is the aisle so important?
Aisles are dead storage. Every metre of aisle you remove converts to rack, so the forklift that runs the narrowest safe aisle usually wins the most positions.
Selective vs double-deep or push-back?
Denser systems (double-deep, push-back, drive-in) fit more pallets per m² but trade away selectivity and need compatible trucks. The right pick depends on SKU count and rotation.
Does this replace a rack design?
No — it sizes the opportunity. A stamped layout accounts for fire code, seismic, flue spaces and column grid, which a capacity estimate does not.
